Stoneygate Ward Newsletter April 20206
Welcome to my monthly update for the residents and communities of the Stoneygate Neighbourhood Policing Area. This newsletter will be circulated on a regular basis and will provide an insight into what is happening at the NPA.
– PCSO 6861 Sam Trantom
Particular areas of concern include St James Road and its connected to local hostels. Evington Rd (Cleanliness, fly tipping, bin misuse, parking, bus stop CCTV), patch walks with multi-agencies, patrols, and Cllr meetings and local crime summit.
Drug dealing (South Highfields including Lincoln Street, Conduit Street, College St, Upper Tichborne Street)
This month we have welcomed the installation of the new pod camera on St James Road. We anticipate that this will play an important role in preventing crime and anti-social behaviour (ASB), while also assisting in the gathering of evidence against those who continue to commit offences in the area. We are aware of an increase in street drinking and related activity at the junction of St James Road and Evington Road. In response, a new ASB report has been created and officers will be identifying those involved and implementing an incremental approach to tackle the behaviour. Where individuals are found to be linked to local hostels, joint working with the council ASB team and hostel providers will be considered to help manage behaviour and support both residents and the wider community.
This month, work has been underway to address concerns around rough sleeping in and around Conduit Street, as well as the use of derelict buildings for drug use and dealing. A joint patch walk was conducted with officers and the council ASB team to identify areas being used for rough sleeping, allowing support to be offered to those involved. Information gathered has also been shared with relevant council teams to enable action to be taken to secure unsafe and derelict buildings. While carrying out enquiries on Conduit Street, PC 1009 identified a male wanted by police. Following a short foot pursuit, the male was arrested for being wanted, and a further arrest was made after a small quantity of drugs was recovered. Engagement work has also taken place with drug users in the area following reports of a potentially dangerous batch of drugs circulating locally, with the aim of reducing harm and signposting individuals to appropriate support services. Just outside the immediate area of concern, officers attended a report of an abandoned, untaxed van. The vehicle was removed, and during this process a substantial quantity of cannabis and weighing scales were recovered from inside. It is believed the vehicle was being used to facilitate drug dealing, and enquiries are ongoing to identify those responsible.
